The Driving Test

What to expect on your Driving Test

The driving test can be stressful, but with some careful planning you can ease your anxieties and maximise your chance of a pass.

First of all, you’ll take your theory test. A pass or fail will determine whether you can take your practical test., but thankfully a little revision and a good eye for the road will get you through.
After this, the practical test can be a little intimidating, but you’ll be doing nothing that you haven’t practiced for in your lessons. We aim to prepare you for everything you’re likely to encounter, and we’re here to help you get through.

Before you can apply to take your practical test you must pass your theory test. The theory test is made up of a multiple-choice part and a hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test. If you pass one part and fail the other you’ll fail the whole test, and you’ll need to take both parts again. The questions in the multiple choice test will depend on the category of vehicle you are hoping to get a licence for. For example, a motorcycle theory test will contain questions that don’t appear in any other test. For the hazard perception test there are no separate versions for different vehicles, but the pass mark is different for them. To practice for your theory test you need to read the Highway Code. Also a good book to read is The Official DVSA Guide to Driving – the essential skills

At the start of your driving test your examiner will ask to see both parts of your driving licence. They will also ask you to read and sign the declaration. Next they will ask if you would like your instructor to come on your driving test and if not would you like your instructor to be present for the de brief at the end of your test. Once outside you will be asked to carry out a eyesight test. For this you must read the number plate on a parked vehicle. You will have to read the number plate from a distance of:
  • 20 metres for vehicles with new style number plates
  • 20.5 metres for vehicles with old style number plates

If you can not read the first number plate you will be asked to read a second one, if you still cant read the number plate your examiner will then measure the distance and ask you to try again. If you still fail to read the number plate you will fail your driving test. You will not be asked to drive. If you need to use glasses make sure you have them with you for your test and use them.

The examiner needs to know that you know your way around the car and its components, so you would know what to do to perform basic maintenance checks on your car to keep it safe on the road.

For this your examiner will give you directions on where they will like you to go. They will be watching to make sure you drive in a safe way following all road signs. You will also be asked to carry out a manoeuvre. This could be:

  • Turning in the road
  • Reversing around a corner
  • Reverse parking

You may also be ask to carry out a controlled stop (emergency stop). You will also have to complete the independent part of the driving test. This will last for around 10 minutes. For this you may be asked to follow road sign directions, for example follow signs for the city centre. Or you may be shown a diagram you need to follow. If you go off the route this is ok as long as you do not commit a driving fault. The examiner will help you to get back onto the correct route. While your on the test remember to relax and drive the way your instructor has shown you on your lessons. If you feel you have made a mistake, dont worry just try to relax and get back on track Your driving test will last about 45 minutes. At the end of your test your examiner will then inform you of the results and give feedback.
